A quick update from our layover day in Bangkok as we are waiting to connect with our Royal Bhutan Airlines flight.
The group arrived early Sunday morning and quickly faced a hot humid wall upon exiting the arrivals hall at the airport. What a difference between March in Toronto weather and the humid 38 degrees in Bangkok.
We had a lot planned for our whirlwind tour of Bangkok. We started the day with a leisurely breakfast buffet or quick nap while others took in the tropical warmth. After a refresh, we all headed downtown Bangkok on the Airport Link mass transit system for a quick exploration of the Siam shopping district and learned some haggling and negotiation skills while at the MBK Center. Students came away with some unique finds and many stories of the merchants they engaged with. After lunch, we went on a guided tour of the Wat Packnam Temple area with Kae a local Bangkok guide we have worked with previously who, patiently explained to us the importance of a few Thai Buddhist sites, and the significance of the ritual and iconic symbols that surrounded us at the Wat Paknam complex and the large seated Golden Buddha. We finished the day by touring the smaller canals by Longtail boat, to see Bangkok from behind the scenes.
This morning, we woke up at 3:00am to catch our early morning flight into Paro, Bhutan – where our Himalayan Adventure truly begins.
