The Kingdom of Bhutan
- Exploring Gross National Happiness (GNH)
- Hiking in the Himalayas - Tiger's Nest is a must!
- School exchange program with partner schools
- Immersion with Bhuddist teachings and practices
- Reflections on a different way to value prosperity
We have been working in Bhutan to provide student programming for over ten years. Tucked away in the Himalayas, this small country has so much to offer when it comes to living a prosperous and fulfilling life. We keep going back because of the friendships, opportunities to connect with the people and splendour of the natural environment. Our student learning exchange is a unique program element that leaves a lasting impression on the visiting students and our Bhutanese hosts. We know it is a world away, but like all great adventures, if the path were easy, it wouldn’t be worth going.
Dates: February to May
March to June are incredible months to visit Bhutan. It avoids the busy summer tourist season and allows the group to see the stunning spring weather as the country wakes up from winter. Other dates are possible, please inquire.
Length: 7 to 10 days in Bhutan
If travelling from North America, it can take 30 hours plus of travel time to land in Paro, Bhutan. When planning it is important to account for two travel days on the departure dates, and at least one on the return end of the program. We generally connect to our Bhutan flight in Bangkok, Thailand.
Cost Considerations
Bhutan is one of the most costly yet rewarding programs we offer. The Sustainable Development Fee is collected by the Bhutanese Government to help offset the impacts of tourism on the environment and is used to support the cultural and historic preservation of what makes Bhutan such a special place to visit. This additional daily fee increases the overall cost of the program. Accommodations options range in cost based on location.
More to Consider
- Did you know the two most spoken languages of Bhutan are English and Dzongkha. While the culture and traditions of the country are inspiring, the ability to communicate in English offers an incredible opportunity to connect with the locals and make our school exchange option a deeply memorable experience.
- The average altitude of the program ranges from 2100m to 3200m. There are exceptions when driving over high passes, or visiting some specific sites.

The problem with typical service learning is that it can create an incredible power imbalance between the host community and the visitors - often causing more harm than good. We are dedicated to changing the way service learning is thought of, planned for, and engaged in. We believe in learning service and interdependence, small changes in language that has a giant change in values and impact. Ask us more about how we are working to change the typical approach to service.
Programs Designed For Growth
Sharing in the experience adds an important layer to the design of all our Global Learning Programs. We ask every program to share their experience through blogs, video highlights and photo albums. We consolidate and transfer learning through real time engagement.
