Belize: Wonders of the Reef, Science of The Blue

This marine conservation program with a focus on ecology, and cultural heritage is based in the unique Corozal region. Nestled along the northern coast, Corozal is rich in biodiversity, home to vibrant marine ecosystems, and one of the last strongholds of ancient artisanal fishing practices. Here, students will explore the delicate balance between conservation, tradition, and sustainable livelihoods.

Through hands-on marine conservation efforts, students will snorkel along the reef to witness the impact of pollution firsthand and contribute to protection initiatives. They’ll partner with a local conservation organisation to learn about manatee rehabilitation, understanding the laws designed to protect these endangered creatures. A visit to a mangrove nursery offers a chance to plant seedlings, helping to restore crucial coastal habitats. Students will also take part in crocodile tagging, assisting researchers in measuring and monitoring these fascinating reptiles, and experience world-class birding as migratory species begin to arrive.

Cultural immersion is woven into every aspect of the journey. Students will connect with local women to learn traditional cooking techniques and hear the stories passed down through generations. They’ll join a women-led initiative combatting the invasive lionfish, by learning how to turn this ecological threat into sustainable jewelry. At Belize’s only sailboat-making workshop, students will craft their own miniature replicas to take home.

One of the most unique experiences awaits in the region’s artisanal fishing community, home to the last-known fish trap techniques dating back to ancient times. Students will observe this traditional practice in action, then learn how to filet or salt their own catch before enjoying a meal of fresh fish and beans.

This program offers a powerful blend of conservation, culture, and hands-on learning, leaving students with a deep appreciation for the connection between people and the sea.

Straight Talk On Service Learning

Are you looking at adding a service learning experience into your program model?

We understand the importance of engaging students with communities through action. The problem with typical service learning is that it can create an incredible power imbalance between the host community and the visitors - often causing more harm than good. We are dedicated to changing the way service learning is thought of, planned for, and engaged in. We believe in learning service and interdependence, small changes in language that has a giant change in values and impact. Ask us more about how we are working to change the typical approach to service.

Programs Designed For Growth

Sharing in the experience adds an important layer to the design of all our Global Learning Programs. We ask every program to share their experience through blogs, video highlights and photo albums. We consolidate and transfer learning through real time engagement.
