Receive your Contact and Placement Chart
We do not have a permanent site. When you work with ALIVE you will be placed at one of 10 host sites to facilitate in-camp programs or where you will launch your canoe trip from. If you are working multiple contracts, you will likely be changing locations and working with a new instructor team on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Prior to your contracts, you will be sent a placement chart. This important document outlines each contract you have committed to working and includes program locations, dates, important times, the name of the school and age of the students you will be facilitating, as well as contact information for all instructors that you will be working with.

Before the Start of the Fall Season the ALIVE Community Comes Together
Instructor Meet & Greet BBQ
Fall is our biggest season and to help kick things off, we offer a Meet and Greet BBQ in Toronto. This takes place less than a week before our September programs begin and attendance is optional. Meeting and forming connections with like-minded people is empowering and often helps people get excited to work together.
Meet the full-time team, some instructors with whom you will be working with and receive your instructor appreciation gift. We want you to have fun and are committed to ensuring that you feel as though you are a highly valued team member.
Arrive At Your First Contract
You will always arrive at your contract the day before the students arrive. This gives you time to meet your lead facilitator who will ensure you feel comfortable with all aspects of the program; the site, your role and responsibilities, risk management protocols and the like. You will also have time to get to know and build community with the instructor team with whom you will be working.

We offer both canoe trips and camp-based programming
Camp-based Programs
Canoe Trip Programs
The day before students arrive, your lead facilitator will ensure that you feel comfortable and ready for the program. You will move into your accommodations, have a site tour, be prepped on the activities you will be facilitating and review emergency procedures. You will also be briefed on the school, their desired learning outcomes of the program and brainstorm how you can work key themes into your facilitation.
We have great systems in place to help get your trip packed efficiently the day before your trip group arrives. First, meet your co-instructor and work through a number of questions to get you on the same page before you embark on your trip together. You will then be cycled through various locations where you will pack food and gear, review your route and emergency procedures, organize your boats and more.
During the program you will facilitate activities you are qualified for and/or shadow those you are interested in. You will encourage students to push their comfort zone and help them transfer learning from the activity to an everyday application. Fall and spring activities include but are not limited to canoeing, nature connection, high ropes and climbing wall, team/community building activities, kayaking, creative art projects and waterfront activities.
On most canoe trip programs you will work with your trip group for one-day in camp prior to departure. You and your co-instructor will use this time to get to know your trip group and assess their skill level. You will get out on the water and practice different stokes, demonstrate a canoe over canoe rescue, practice portaging, discuss what to pack for a trip and most importantly, start to build group cohesion.
Many in-camp programs include experiential workshops designed to deepen and maximize student learning. Rooted in positive psychology, workshops topics range from leadership development, self-understanding and critical thinking to the science of hope, understanding our default cognitive distortions and developing a reverence for the natural world. Many instructors find that being a part of these workshops helps not only refine their facilitation skills, but grow as individuals. Have an idea for a workshop? We would love to hear from you.
Our flatwater canoe trips range from 2 – 5 nights in length. We value time on canoe trips to facilitate lessons. For many programs, routes are planned to give you time to teach as well as open and close the day thoughtfully. Balance bringing your personal flare and being open-minded to learning new systems and facilitation techniques. Experience the beauty of Algonquin Park in the fall.
