The SMLS/RSGC ALIVE Outdoors Bhutan trip started at Toronto’s Pearson airport on March 10 at 11:00 and we started our adventure in Bhutan on Sunday March 12 at noon. During these 48 hours of travelling we experienced the challenges faced when travelling to such a distant and remote country. To arrive at our final destination, it took three flights through four airports. We crossed two continents and 5 countries. In order for the travel to be successful we ALL had to have positive attitudes towards challenges such as long lines and flights delays. Most importantly, we had to keep each other positive by helping each other through immigration, security, the long walks and tedious delays at various gates at various airports.
The longest flight was Toronto to Honk Kong, the first portion of our adventure. This flight was the longest at 15 hours and our biggest challenge was trying to get some sleep. We had to sleep in order to have energy for the next portion of the trip and we had to be able to solve problems that we may encounter.
The next transfer was from Hong Kong to Bangkok. After arrival in Bangkok we had a short layover before we caught our final flight to Paro airport in Bhutan. This final flight was an airbus flight which meant that we landed in Kolkata, India to drop off and pick up passengers before we finally continued towards Bhutan. At this point we are beyond exhausted.
The landing in Paro airport in Bhutan was truly remarkable because of the fantastic views of the Himalayan mountains. Flying amongst the Himalayan mountains was absolutely amazing because we flew among the clouds, and had vistas that we felt we could reach out and touch. The scene was unforgettable and thankfully, the landing was smooth. After a long 48 hours we had finally arrived in Bhutan ready to start our adventure.
Upon arrival, we were taken to a Buddhist Temple where we experienced a cleansing and good wishes ceremony. It was extremely special as we were alone in the monastery for a private ceremony. Llama Gyem Tshering did a purification to wash us of our sins and provide each of us good wishes. We received a holy string to protect us from the elements and to wish us each longevity. We are off to bed. Tomorrow we are looking forward to our day trip to Dochula Pass with fantastic views of the Bhutanese Himalayas
